Why you can RELAX on STARTING goals in the New Year…

I love the energy of possibility, freshness, and the sense of starting over that a new year brings. This time of year often inspires a renewed sense of purpose and determination.  I also like the idea of setting resolutions and goals for the new year, but if you were to ask me what my 2016 resolutions were, I’d tell you, “I honestly can’t remember!”.  For many people, it’s things like “lose weight”, “enjoy life to the fullest”, “fall in love”, “spend more time with family and friends”, “save more money”, “travel more”, and so on.  And although these are all beautiful goals, winter is actually a time for setting goals, not starting goals.  Winter is a time for reflection.  The planning and preparation that you do in winter will naturally lead to the energy and focus of acting on your goals in the springtime (winter = reflection, spring = action).  So, don’t go into a panic or feel pressured just because the calendar is turning a page.  Take the next couple of months to honor yourself with quiet introspection, reflection, learning from 2016’s lessons and lean in the direction of where your energy should be directed.  In doing so, you will be surprised at the goals you envision, will have time to make a plan for achieving them, and pick up the energy just as spring arrives.

This new year, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the direction of your life.  Renew your mind and focus on all of the aspects of your life, including your health, relationships, spirituality, finances, home environment, education, beauty, mindset, career, community, etc.  To that end, here are some questions for you to explore, that may help to remind you of areas that you need more nurturing and attention in the coming year:

  1.  What is the single biggest time-waster in your life, and what will you do about it?
  2.  What is the single most important thing you could do to improve the quality of your life?
  3.  In which spiritual discipline do you most want to make progress, and what will you do about it?
  4.  What single thing that you plan to do in the coming year, will matter most in 10 years? In eternity?
  5.  What’s the most important decision you need to make for 2017?
  6.  What area of your life most needs simplifying, and what’s one way you could simplify in that area?
  7.  What habit would you most like to establish in 2017?
  8.  What is your most important financial goal, and what is the most important step you can take toward achieving it?
  9.  What one thing do you most regret about 2016, and what will you do about it in the coming year?
  10.  What single blessing do you want to seek most earnestly in 2017?
  11.  In what area of your life do you most need growth, and what will you do about it?
  12.  How will you continue to learn and intellectually grow in the coming year ?
  13.  What’s trip do you most want to take in 2017?
  14.  What habits or rituals can you establish to feel your best in the coming year?
  15.  How can you love yourself more in the coming year?

May the new year see you loving, giving and living!  Have a beautiful 2017!
