“Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.”
Would you believe that one of the most antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mood and energy boosting remedies can be attained by simply walking barefoot on the Earth? Believe it or not, the practice of “grounding” (or “earthing”) is said to have an amazing effect on our bodies health. For over a decade, research has emerged that suggests that direct physical connection with the abundant supply of the electrons on the surface of the Earth can promote positive physiological changes and benefits to our well being, such as improved sleep, reduced cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and reduced pain. Our immune systems function best when we have a balanced supply of electrons in our bodies. Back in the day, this wasn’t an issue for humans because we had continuous contact with the Earth through time spent outdoors in nature, from walking on the ground barefoot, to gardening with our bare feet in the soil. Now, we rarely make that connection. Not only do we hardly ever go outside without shoes, but we are also exposed to very large amounts of electric and magnetic fields daily, that can throw our systems out of whack. Studies suggest that this disconnect may be a major contributor to physiological dysfunction and sickness. Connecting with the Earth’s electrons has been found to promote positive physical changes and overall wellness.
I personally notice a huge difference in my mood and energy when I take a walk barefoot in the grass, or make a connection between my feet and the warmth of the concrete outside. My favorite connection is made at the beach, where the combination of the sand and the salt and mineral rich ocean water transports the Earth’s free electrons to my feet, neutralizing the positive charges (free radicals) in the process. Not only does it feel good physically, but having the knowledge that I’m actually doing something good for my body makes me want to take as many opportunities as I can to ground myself and restore balance. This practice has become somewhat of a ritual for me. I also suggest grounding to almost every client that I work with, as a prescription for balancing out energy (read more about energy, grounding, and my other natural prescriptions for maintaining balance here).
So how does grounding work?
Just as electrical outlets in our homes have been grounded to avoid the buildup of excess positive charges, our bodies need a supply of negative charges and the same grounding effect. The electrons that our bodies need can be freely, easily, and naturally obtained by barefoot contact with the Earth – be it grass, sand, dirt, or concrete. The Earth maintains a negative electrical potential on it’s surface, and when we come into direct contact with its surface, the Earth’s electrons are conducted to our bodies bringing them to the same potential. Over time, this practice can have antioxidant effects that can protect our bodies from inflammation and can minimize the consequences of exposure to electromagnetic radiation. Grounding is known to reduce the effects of stress, promote restful sleep, reduce fatigue, improve blood viscosity, balance out the nervous system, and help with arthritis.
Nature has such a beautiful way of caring for us!

As a side note…
There are several products on the market that are used as tools for grounding such as mats, bands, sheets, blankets, and patches – and are said to produce the same positive effects as described in this article. I have not personally tried any of these products, nor do I endorse, promote, or encourage the use of products for grounding. This article promotes the natural healing available to us from Mother Earth herself. As with all of my prescribed holistic treatments – they are not meant to take the place of standard medical or psychological treatment, but to accompany and work alongside with it.
